A Day in the Life of a Music Studio Summer Camp Student: 4-7 Years Old

July 8, 2026

At The Music Studio, we have two summer day camps specifically for children four to seven years old: Musical Beginnings Camp, for ages four and five; and Kidzrock, for ages four to seven.

Our Musical Beginnings Camp introduces young beginners to music in a safe and positive environment. Che camp provide the perfect first step into the world of music. Children learn basic performance skills as they sing, dance and learn rhythms by ear. We focus on music appreciation as we explore instruments such as the keyboards and xylophones. Students have a chance to sing and play individually as well as in a group. Other activities include learning music theory, musical colouring sheets, outdoor time, musical games, and arts and crafts. And it all ends with a final day performance!

Our Kidzrock Camp teaches children how to play an instrument in the group setting of a rock band. Band members work together to learn, rehearse and perform on modified instruments including drums, electric guitar and keyboard while learning musical fundamentals and other skills including singing. Kidzrock Band members rotate on instruments as they learn the basics of each instrument in the rock band. Kidzrock features a colour-coded note reading system that is based on traditional, written music allowing children to immediately read music and play an instrument.

But how do we do all that in a single week?

Take a peek at a day in the life of a student at The Music Studio’s Summer Music Camps for four to seven year olds!

Musical Beginnings Camp

9:00 AM

Each day begins with the morning greeting and circle time! During circle time students sing solfege songs (simple melodies using “do,” “re,” “me,” “fa,” “so,” “la,” and “ti”). These songs not only help warm up their bodies and voices for the day’s musical activities, they also help young musicians build their aural skills as well as their ability to match pitches.

9:45 AM

With their voices warmed up, students get a thirty minute free play session.

10:15 AM

Musical instruction begins with basic music theory, enhanced with a colouring activity.

10:45 AM

Because learning brains and bodies need fuel, after the music theory lessons, students break for a fifteen minutes snack.

11:00 AM

Once students are refuelled, it’s time for the keyboard! Students spend the next forty-five minutes playing more simple solfege songs on keyboards.

11:45 AM

It’s time to get up an move! Students sing songs that involve whole body movement and dance!

12:15 PM

With their bodies engaged, it’s time to engage the brain! Students take fifteen minutes to work together on a group puzzle.

12:30 PM

Lunch break!

1:00 PM

No summer camp is complete without some outdoor time! Weather permitting, of course, students get forty-five minutes to enjoy the summer afternoon!

1:45 PM

With some of that post-lunch energy burnt off, it’s circle time with lyric singing.

2:15 PM

Time for another snack break to refuel!

2:30 PM

During the mid-afternoon, students have another music theory lessons supported by a colouring activity.

2:45 PM

After the section music theory session, our young students end their musical instruction for the day with rhythm and musical notation games.

3:15 PM

Students have one more free play session with their friends to close out the day!

3:45 PM

The Musical Beginnings Camp day come to an end with some tidying up, a short story time, and a group goodbye song.

Kidzrock Camp

9:00 AM

Just like the Musical Beginnings Camp, our Kidzrock camp begins with the morning greeting and circle time for singing solfege songs to warm up their bodies and voices.

9:10 AM

Since Kidzrock is a band in every sense of the word, it’s important to start the day with a band meeting, where students discuss the activities and the goals they for the day.

9:30 AM

Kidzrock band class begins!

Students learn: the basics of guitar, drums, and keyboards; how to read and play notes on the treble and percussion clef; improvisation; singing on pitch; musical dynamics; musical terminology.

10:15 AM

After forty-five minutes of band class, students switch things up a little and spend fifteen minutes working on foundational musical terms.

10:30 AM

Time to refuel with a snack break!

11:00 AM

Students take an hour for arts and crafts and a free play session.

12:00 PM

Time for lunch!

12:30 PM

Kidzrock band class reumes.

1:00 PM

Because every summer camp needs time in the sun, students spend an hour every day (weather permitting) with outside time.

2:00 PM

Once the students come back inside, they take thirty minutes for an afternoon snack break to refuel for the rest of the day.

2:30 PM

The day’s musical instruction finished out with a band vocal lesson.

3:00 PM

And the day comes to a close with another arts and crafts and free play session.

The Music Studio provides before camp care from 8:30 am – 9:00 am and after camp care from 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm each day of the camp for an additional fee. Extended care must be arranged and paid for at registration.
