“I’m With the Band:” The Benefits of Band Participation

September 9, 2026

It’s common knowledge that music students often do better in school than their non-musical peers. Some studies have even shown that American music students score an average of 31 points higher in reading, 23 points higher in math, and 31 points higher in writing on the SAT. Researchers have also shown a powerful connection between people who participated in school arts and a higher grade point averages.

Further studies have confirmed that students enrolled in music programs performed better than their peers in ever indicator, including GPA, graduation rate, ACT scores, attendance, and even disciplinary referrals. Overall, it’s clear that the more a student participates in music, the more positive these benefits become.

However, equally important are the far less tangible qualities that come from music, and playing in a band in particular; qualities often found on a sport team.

Belonging

Fitting in–as a kid or an adult–can be tough! But a band provides students with an exciting place to belong, both within and outside the school environment. It offers a home where students can feel safe and confident, and a place to forge friendships and skills to last a lifetime, no matter where the world takes them.

Creativity & Expression

Playing with a band enhances creative thinking processes, and offers an enriching outlet for self expression. It give kids a chance to create beauty, elicit emotion, and create a work of art. Participating in a band is a fresh opportunity to foster both creative thought and growth.

Collaboration & Accountability

Playing in a band is, by its nature, a collaborative effort! It provides a way to learn patience, persistence, and responsibility in a way that is the same as it is on any kind of team. Each band member has their own responsibilities that the others rely on. Each member plays off the others.

Students learn that missing a note or two impacts their band mates in very real ways. But they also see that when all the pieces come together, the joy of collaboration is magical. Like a sport team pushes kids to do their best for the team, a band pushes students to do better for the good of the whole.

Perserverance

In a world of AI and instant gratification, music in general–and a band in particular–is a rare chance for kids to learn how to handle failure, and to push through it to success. Mastering any instrument takes years of hard, dedicated work, but the rewards of jamming with friends cannot be measured.

Mental & Physical Acuity

Skills learned from playing in a band go far beyond the scholastic. Students show improved audio and visual perception, upgraded fine motor control, and strongly developed muscle memory.

Playing with a band also improves mental dexterity. Band members show increased cognitive reasoning and collaborative skills, as well as improved emotional balance and creative thinking. And even better, these skills attained through playing with a band can be applied in other areas of live.
